Overview
According to the American Diabetes Association, an estimated 23.6 million people in our country have diabetes. This is a serious, lifelong condition, and proper diet is a crucial part in managing its symptoms.
Needs
The nutritional needs of someone with diabetes is the same as anyone else's. However, controlling sugar intake (including simple carbohydrates) is very important. Always include carbohydrates, proteins and fats at every meal. This will help keep blood sugar and insulin levels from spiking and dropping too quickly. A good rule of thumb is 10 percent to 20 percent of calories from protein, no more than 30 percent from fat, and 50 percent to 60 percent from carbohydrates.
The Good and Bad
All carbohydrates are not created equal; some are helpful, while others are very detrimental. The good guys generally include whole grains, nuts and seeds, legumes and beans, and green vegetables. The bad guys include refined sugar, white flour and white rice.
Frequency
Equally as important to what you eat is how often you eat. To maintain even blood sugar levels, aim to eat four to five smaller meals, instead of three heavier meals.
Benefits
The benefits of healthful eating for any condition are numerous. One of the biggest benefits for a diabetic is keeping their blood sugar levels steady, which will also help mood and energy levels.
Considerations
In addition to a healthful diet, physical exercise is a big part in preventing complications from diabetes.
